Six to Eight Black Men

This short story was pretty funny.  Yet, it made me curious to see how accurate he described how the Dutch celebrate Christmas.  It is pretty close but no mention of the 6-8 black men that travel with him.  However, one site did mention a guy named Black Peter that was Santa's assistant. 

January Book

Hello! I have picked a book for January. It is The Piano Teacher by Janice Lee. I am thinking about Tuesday, January 19th for the date and meeting at Viengs Asian Bistro because it goes with the book :) I will send an evite out eventually.

Laugh Out Loud Passages

I laughed out loud after I read this passage.  Dinah, The Christmas Whore pg 118

" Two young men passed down the sidewalk carrying a mattress, and one of them turned to yell, "Get that ho off the street!"

Had we been in a richer or poorer neighborhood, I might have searched the ground for a gardening tool, fearful that once again I might step on the thing and split my lip with the handle. Ho.

Please share any other parts that you thought funny here.  Sometimes by the time we go to Book Club I forget to share.

Fermina's Wake-Up Call (page 102)

"...instead of the commotion of love, she felt the abyss of disenchantment.  In an instant the magnitude of her own mistake  was revealed to her, and she asked herself, appalled, how she could have nurtured such a  chimera in her heart for so long and with so much ferocity..."

Believe me, as Fermina walked through that market place and Florentino was stalking her like a crazed person, I was on pins and needles because I DO NOT like this insane character.  Who the hell, at his age, falls in love with a 12 year old and obsesses about her besides a sick and deranged pedophile?  He reminds me of another stalking individual from another book--EDWARD! But at least Edward is likable.

Anyway, when Fermina turns and realizes that she has been in love with the image of love (I mean she was so young and did not have a really great role model.  Her Aunt egged her on--probably because she was a spinster and wanted to live through her niece's romances) and was not REALLY in love with him, I wanted to jump for joy and say THANK GOODNESS. 

Well, that is my thoughts on that.  Does anyone else have something to add?

December Book Club

Is anyone interested in drawing names in November and having a secret Santa celebration for the December meeting?  The present would be a book that we think the person were drew would enjoy.  So, nothing to expensive.

Hello there! I have picked "Love in the Time of Cholera" as November's Book!

I have heard wonderful things about this book! I do not like to be jaded by any prior knowledge about books or movies so I'm posting a link if you'd like to read a little synopsis...here it is at Wikipedia! I think the book has something to do with love or something...with a touch of cholera perhaps?...we shall see...ha! Actually I did read (on accident) this snippet from the wiki site..."García Márquez's main notion is that love sickness is a literal illness, a disease comparable to cholera." ...very innn-teresting...

Since it seems ya'll like Thursdays...we'll meet on Thursday November 19th! I'll do an evite of course and choose a location some other time...

October's Book and Date

Hi everyone,

October's book will be Pledged by Alexandra Robbins. This is a non-fiction book about a reporter that goes undercover and makes friends with a mixture of sorority girls. I think this would bring up some interesting issues and hopefully spark some healthy debates.

I have picked Tuesday, October 8th for the date.  I will also be sending out an Evite in the next few days.

September Book Club Selection

I have chosen While I was Gone by Sue Miller for our September book club. We'll meet Thursday, September 17th at Luchita's Mexican Restaurant at 7 p.m.

Here's a little info about the book. It was an Oprah book club pick in 2000.

September Book Club and Book Exhange

I have an idea. I know, I need to stop being so overbearing. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to begin our NEW book club by having a used/new book exchange. Anyone who would like to participate would bring in either a used book or a new one (it truly does not matter-used preferred) they have read and enjoyed to the September Book Club. We would then have a little book exchange. Everyone would leave with a "new" book to read. I think it would be a great way to start off the club.

Breaking Away and Becoming Our Own

Welcome to the newly formed APPTA Book Club #1! I have temporarily decided to name our book club The Triple B Club. The three bs standing for Booze, Broads,and Books. I thought that really described our club to a T. Thank you Lisa D for coming up with the name. If everyone is in agreement, we will keep the name as is.

After the August book club, we will officially be The Triple B Club. Denise has kindly volunteered to pick the next book and location. Thank you Denise, we can not wait to see what you will pick.

I know I tried to implement a Reading Journal that failed once it got into Ann's hands (thank you Ann). I think this will be easier to keep going because I will always have it within reach. I can sometimes be a control freak. I hope everyone will take the time to participate in this blog. This is something I had to do during one of my MSU master courses and I really thought it was a good idea. I believe it will only enhance our club and also serve as a tool to help us dive deeper into the discussions.

Of course, I should warn you to take caution as to when you view the blogs. We don't want to spoil anything if you have not gotten to the part that is being blogged about. So, Rule # 1: Give us a heads up to what chapter of the book you are discussing and include "spoiler alerts" if necessary.

Well, welcome and please enjoy all the future books that our club will be reading.
